Matthew has been preeminently the Gospel of the church. It tells us of God’s love for Israel and of the fulfillment in Christ of God’s promise to the nation. It gives the complete story of Jesus’ ministry, death and resurrection. The Sermon on the Mount and some of the most precious of Jesus’ parables are contained in this Gospel.

1:17 So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and from David until the carrying away into Babylon are fourteen generations; and from the carrying away into Babylon unto Christ are fourteen generations.
